Planting Guide
1.Find the trunk flare (where trunk meets large roots). Dig a hole to a depth of the distance from the flare to the bottom of the root ball and 2-3x the width of the root ball. Slope the sides of the hold to create a saucer-shaped hole.
2. Place the root ball in the hole and remove as much of the burlap, rope and wire basket as possible without damaging the root ball.
3. Fill the hole halfway using a mixture of 2 parts soil taken from the hole and 1 part amendments, like complete planting mix or peat moss and composted manure. Water the soil mixture to remove large air pockets and then allow to drain.
4.Fill the hole with soil mixture up to ground level, keeping the flare uncovered. Water deeply and apply 2-4” of mulch. Don’t mound up mulch or place it against the trunk.
5. During the growing season, water plant only when necessary and soak the soil deeply. To determine the accuracy and frequency of the watering needed occasionally dig down 8”, keeping away from the trunk.
